Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
28/11/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable – others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.

Monday: I Thessalonians 2:20-3:8 & Luke 14:12-15
Tuesday: I Thessalonians 3:9-13 & Luke 14:25-35
Wednesday: I Thessalonians 4:1-12 & Luke 15:1-10
Thursday: I Thessalonians 5:1-8 & Luke 16:1-9
Friday: I Thessalonians 5:9-13, 24-28 & Luke 16:15-18, 17:1-4
Saturday: II Corinthians 11:1-6 & Luke 9:57-6:2

Please find below several very nice articles on how to read the scripture from an Orthodox point of view.

Confession & Communion at St. Vladimir’s + Rule to Prepare for Communion

Posted by Fr. Gregory

Confession and Communion are the two sacraments we most often partake of as Orthodox Christians and thus it behooves us to learn about these, how to prepare for these, and how to best take advantage of the Grace that our Lord freely gives us in these sacraments. At St. Vladimir’s we have created a special web site for this purpose with much information in this regard. Please find the web site listed below and please contact Fr. Gregory with questions!

New Icon Given - Another to be Painted
26/11/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Thank God, we have received a beautiful gift for our parish – a copy of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God. We will place this icon in a prominent place – above the icon of St. John of Shanghai & San Francisco. But we will need an icon to go above St. Xenia too – otherwise the balance of the iconography will be quite out of sorts. The perfect icon to bring us back to symmetry would be an icon of St. Job of Pochaev of the same size.

We have decided to crowd fund this – so everyone can add their part and pay for the icon of St. Job together as a parish family. Please make a donation today – and if we all do this together we’ll get this paid for very quickly! -Fr. Gregory

Parish Prayer Kit Now Available!

Everyone should own a prayer book. We strongly recommend the Jordanville edition, and we have this in our parish kiosk in English and Russian. However, sometimes we don't have a prayer book handy, or sometimes we need practical tools in our "prayer kit".

Nativity Lent Begins November 28
25/11/21, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please note that the yearly Lenten period in preparation for our Lord’s Nativity begins on November 28. From this day until January 7 we do not partake of meat or dairy products. On many days during this lent fish is allowed. Please consult the parish schedule of services for details in this regard. Have questions about fasting? Never tried to follow the fast before? Please talk to Fr. Gregory or Fr. Colin for answers! “We abstain from meats that we might abstain from the passions...” writes St. John Chrysostom. Let us indeed use the fast for what it is – a tool to aid us in our spiritual struggle for salvation!
