New Icon Given - Another to be Painted
26/11/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Thank God, we have received a beautiful gift for our parish – a copy of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God. We will place this icon in a prominent place – above the icon of St. John of Shanghai & San Francisco. But we will need an icon to go above St. Xenia too – otherwise the balance of the iconography will be quite out of sorts. The perfect icon to bring us back to symmetry would be an icon of St. Job of Pochaev of the same size.

We have decided to crowd fund this – so everyone can add their part and pay for the icon of St. Job together as a parish family. Please make a donation today – and if we all do this together we’ll get this paid for very quickly! -Fr. Gregory

Parish Prayer Kit Now Available!
25/11/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Everyone should own a prayer book. We strongly recommend the Jordanville edition, and we have this in our parish kiosk in English and Russian. However, sometimes we don't have a prayer book handy, or sometimes we need practical tools in our "prayer kit".

Nativity Lent Begins November 28
25/11/21, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please note that the yearly Lenten period in preparation for our Lord’s Nativity begins on November 28. From this day until January 7 we do not partake of meat or dairy products. On many days during this lent fish is allowed. Please consult the parish schedule of services for details in this regard. Have questions about fasting? Never tried to follow the fast before? Please talk to Fr. Gregory or Fr. Colin for answers! “We abstain from meats that we might abstain from the passions...” writes St. John Chrysostom. Let us indeed use the fast for what it is – a tool to aid us in our spiritual struggle for salvation!

Annual Bake Sale is December 18!
24/11/21, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Save the date! And spread the word! The St. Vladimir’s Christmas Bake Sale is back! More information to come soon, but now is the time to reach out to our Head Sister, Leta Nikulshina, and ask her what she needs you to bake. This can be a great fund raiser and a great outreach to our local community if we all pitch in and make it just that. So let’s do that! Please contact Leta today, or when you see her in church, and ask how you can help. And tell everyone you know to come join us! A flyer can be found at this link:

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
24/11/21, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the children’s portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

For Adults: from the writings of Blessed Theophylact

For Youth: from the Antiochian Archdiocese (various age groups)

Diocesan Fund for those in Need

Posted by Fr. Gregory

On the Thanksgiving weekend every year Archbishop Peter blesses for a special collection to benefit the Diocese of Chicago & Mid-America Fund for those in Need of Assistance. People come to Vladyka for help on a regular basis. This fund allows him to help those he feels need that help. Please plan to make a donation when you come to the Cross this Sunday, November 28. If you cannot be present, and we know lots of folks will be traveling for the holiday, but would like to support this effort, please contact our parish Treasurer, Mikhail Fisenkov at treasurer@stvladimiraami.org.

Please plan to join us for the feast of the St. John the Merciful on Wednesday, November 24 at 6:00 p.m. for Evening Services and on Thursday, November 25 at 8:00 a.m. for Divine Liturgy.

Eucharist means “Thanksgiving”. Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. See how we did that? :) Please join us to mark this most Orthodox Christian of all secular holidays, for as Orthodox Christians we should always be thankful people, 365 days per year. Start off the Thanksgiving feast with the Divine Service of Thanksgiving – the Divine Liturgy!

THERE IS NO PRESCHOOL CATECHISM THIS WEDNESDAY!

If you cannot come to the Evening Services or Liturgy please try to join us on one of our live streams:

Monday First Things - Teachings of the Holy Fathers

“If, when a man is rebuked or corrected, he is roused to anger, it is a sign that he freely gives way to his passions. Bearing a rebuke or correction without being put out is a sign that a man does not give way to his passion through weakness or ignorance.”
