Traverse City Feast Day
30/11/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Today our sister parish in Traverse City celebrates its feast day. This is the only parish in the world named after St. Sebastian of Jackson. Do you know about this contemporary saint? If not, please read below to learn more. We should know the saints of the parishes in our state - let's start with St. Sebastian!

Congratulations for Fr. Micah and the faithful in Traverse City with their second Pascha!

Congratulations to all with the beginning of the Nativity Lent!
27/11/20, 11:59 PM

We congratulate all our parish family with the beginning of the yearly Lenten period preceding the feast of our Lord’s Nativity! This Lenten period begins November 28 each year and runs until January 7 – the feast of our Lord’s Nativity. This Lenten period is much less stringent than Great Lent. During this fast, as usual, we abstain from meat and dairy products. But fish is allowed on many days. Please consult our parish schedule (linked below) for more details on the culinary aspects of fasting. Of course, the culinary fast is a tool to aid us spiritually to prepare for our Lord’s Nativity – it is not an end unto itself. If you have not fasted in the past please consult Fr. Gregory for practical advice on how to be successful in fasting. Fasting a very important way that we place ourselves in obedience to the Church, the Ark of our salvation, and extraordinarily helpful in our spiritual struggle to draw nearer to our Lord at this special time of year.

How You Can Help!
27/11/20, 06:00 PM

People often ask us how they can help our parish. On one level that answer is different for everyone. Each of us should use the talents that the Lord has given us for His glory. But specifically we need more catechists: trained parishioners who can help prepare adults for baptism, Godparents for their duties, and couples for marriage. Our diocesan Pastoral School has a Catechist Program that starts each fall. Please consider if you could enter this two-semester program. More catechists will help our parish A LOT. And if this isn’t the thing for you that is fine – but please do consider how you can use your talents for God’s glory. We will all answer for that when we leave this life. Let’s prepare a good answer beginning today! For more information on our catechism program at St. Vladimir's please see Deacon Colin, who heads up this effort!

There are 9 Divine Services appointed to be served each day of the year. Those are:

Vespers
Compline
Midnight Office
Matins
First Hour
Third Hour
Sixth Hour
Divine Liturgy or Typica
Ninth Hour

In parishes generally Compline and Midnight Office are served very rarely, as is the Ninth Hour. Not never – just rarely. The typical parish cycle of Divine Services is:

Happy Thanksgiving!

We congratulate all our St. Vladimir's family and friends with the Thanksgiving Holiday. This civil holiday - very Christian in its character - reminds us of our need to thank God for His many blessings upon us. May we humbly suggest, before you sit down to your family dinner today, that you take a few minutes either privately or as a family to thank God for the many blessings He has given you this past year, and for the many blessings He has given to our parish family. We are privileged to call you all brothers and sisters in Christ, and we thank God for you and for our parish family. Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is Coming – Special Collections
24/11/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Each year around the Thanksgiving Holiday we have two special collections in our parish to assist those in need. We thank God prayerfully for His bounty towards us, and we thank Him materially by helping those who are struggling in this life.

On the Sunday BEFORE Thanksgiving (this coming Sunday, November 22) we have a collection to support International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC). IOCC is the clearinghouse charity for all Orthodox Churches in North America. They provide help to all in need in North American and throughout the world – regardless of their confession of faith.

Update 11/23/20: We collected $172 on Sunday, November 22 for IOCC. Thank you all!

On the Sunday AFTER Thanksgiving (Sunday, November 29) we have a collection to support our Diocesan Fund for those in Need. Archbishop Peter is often approached for help – this fund allows him to help those who are appealing to him in their time of difficulty.

Both these collections will take place in the church at the end of the Liturgy, as we receive the antidron. If you would like to support the November 29 collection you can do that here (please specify the reason for your donation):
