Monday First Things - Teachings of the Holy Fathers

Everyone bears his cross, and you bear your cross, even though it is only the size of a finger; you still bear it. The bearing of a cross is absolutely necessary for every Christian for his salvation, and not only for monks. Yes, everyone bears a cross, and has borne a cross; even the Incarnate God bore a cross, and His Cross was the heaviest, as if combining in itself all the crosses of mankind. And take note: God is carrying the cross and a man (Simon the Cyrenian) helps Him. He takes the cross from Him and carries it himself. This means that by bearing our crosses we help the Lord to carry the cross, i.e., we are preparing to be His servants in heaven in the choir of bodieless Spirits… What a high calling!

Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
9/10/22, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable – others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.

Monday: Ephesians 4:25-32 & Luke 4:37-44
Tuesday: Ephesians 5:20-26 & Luke 5:12-16
Wednesday: Ephesians 5:25-33 & Luke 5:33-39
Thursday: Ephesians 5:33-6:9 & Luke 6:12-19
Friday: Ephesians 6:18-24 & Luke 6:17-23
Saturday: I Corinthians 15:39-45 & Luke 5:17-26

Confession and Communion are the two sacraments we most often partake of as Orthodox Christians and thus it behooves us to learn about these, how to prepare for these, and how to best take advantage of the Grace that our Lord freely gives us in these sacraments. At St. Vladimir’s we have created a special web site for this purpose with much information in this regard. Please find the web site listed below and please contact Fr. Gregory with questions!

We all have friends and loved ones that we want to introduce to the Church. But some people are shy – they might not want to visit right away or talk to one of our priests. For this reason we have provide the resources on our Catechism Resources page: books, articles, videos, and audio files. Please share the link with friend and loved ones – and please feel free to access those resources for your own edification too!

Church School is IN SESSION!
7/10/22, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

St. Vladimir’s Church School begins September 24! Classes will be held every Saturday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. through December 17 with the exception of November 24. We have condensed the classes to the greatest extent possible for the convenience of our busy families – we value your time. Please do us the favor of valuing the time of the teachers and other volunteers who make our Church School possible by being on time.

All children are urged to participate in the Vigil following Church School and in the Sunday (and other feast day) Divine Liturgies to the greatest extent possible by ringing bells, serving in the altar, singing, helping in the kiosk, and most importantly by being present in the church and praying with their parish family, AND ESPECIALLY by partaking of the Holy Mysteries. The Liturgy is not a spectacle or event that we watch, but a prayerful “work of the people” that we participate in through our prayerful involvement. Please contact Fr. Gregory or Fr. Colin with questions in this regard.

To learn more about our Church School please contact the Church School Coordinator, Alexandra Pyrozhenko at info@stvladimiraami.org or visit our Church School Page.
