Time Changes 11/2/14 – Avoid the Horror of Arriving Early!
27/10/14, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
Of course we are joking – it is GOOD to come to the Divine Services early, but we also want you to remember that we “fall back” one hour on Sunday, November 2, 2014. That is, Daylight Savings Time ends and we adjust our clocks before going to bed by turning them back by one hour. If you forget do not worry – confessions begin at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday in any case, so you will really be right on time! :)

The memorial Saturday which falls before the feast of the Great Martyr Demetrius generally falls on the Saturday proceeding St. Demetrius' commemoration, October 26/November 8. At St. Vladimir's the memorial Demetrius Saturday will be celebrated on October 25 at 6:00 p.m. And October 26 at 8:00 a.m. Please join us as your schedule allows! More information about Demetrius Saturday can be found at the links below.

Optina Elders Celebrated Tonight and Tomorrow
22/10/14, 12:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
Please join us for the feast of the Optina Elders this evening at 6:00 p.m. and tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. The monastic saints of the Optina monastery are not simply historical personages, but rather are those, as are the other saints of the Church, who have attained a place at the throne of God and entreat Him on our behalf. Thus, they are important for us in our days, just as they were important for those who were their contemporaries. Please learn more about the Optina Elders at the links below and please join us this evening and tomorrow morning as your schedule allows!

Today is Labor Day - what does that mean to us?
1/9/14, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
Today marks the civil holiday of Labor Day. On this day we remember those who fought for workers' rights in America and founded the first labor unions to protect workers and organize to collectively negotiate with management to increase workers' pay, increase safety in the work place, and other similar labor advances. Although no doubt there is much debate among our parish family members about the efficacy of unions in our days this is not the point of this post. Rather, it is informative for us to understand that the nascent labor movement practically got its start here in Michigan in the auto plants of Flint and Detroit. There is no doubt that workers' rights – especially safety – were sorely lacking in those days. As Orthodox Christians we thank God for the life He has given us. We must be lovers of labor and work diligently and sincerely as a Christian duty. This is not to say we should accept abuse – not by any means. But the Lord has kindly arranged the world that we would work for our daily bread. Let us thank God that He has given us this order, and that he has provided us the opportunity to work and to support our families in peace here in America. We are people of hope, people of love, and people of thankfulness. We have much to thank God for as regards our ability to work safely here in America. Today is a day that allows us to concentrate on that thankfulness. Let us take a moment today to do that and not forget that this is not just a day off of work, but a day to thank God for His love and mercy towards us.
