Folks ask about this each year during Great Lent. This is an excerpt from a presentation I gave to the clergy of the Eastern American Diocese a few years ago. Hopefully it is helpful.

Monday First Things - Teachings of the Holy Fathers

Christ does not demand anything from you to give you His holy gifts other than to acknowledge that anything good you happen to have belongs to Him. Sympathize with him who does not have gifts. Dont judge him because he doesnt have any, saying that he is a sinner, depraved, evil, a babbler, a thief, a fornicator, a liar. If you acquire this knowledge, you will never be able to judge anyone, even if you see him committing a mortal sin, because you would say right away: He doesnt have Your grace, my Christ, and that is why he sins. If You leave me, I shall do worse things. If I am standing, it is because You are supporting me. This brother does as much as he can. He is blind. How do You expect him to see without eyes? He is poor. How can You demand riches from him? Give him riches. Give him eyes to see.

Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
12/3/23, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.

Monday: Isaiah 8:13-9:7, Genesis 6:9-22, Proverbs 8:1-21
Tuesday: Isaiah 9:9-10:4, Genesis 7:1-5, Proverbs 8:32-9:11
Wednesday: Isaiah 10:12-20, Genesis 7:6-9, Proverbs 9:12-18
Thursday: Isaiah 11:10-12:2, Genesis 7:11-8:3, Proverbs 10:1-22
Friday: Isaiah 13:2-13, Genesis 8:4-21, Proverbs 10:31-11:12
Saturday: Hebrews 10:32-38 & Mark 2:14-17

Confession & Communion at St. Vladimirs + Rule to Prepare for Communion
12/3/23, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Confession and Communion are the two sacraments we most often partake of as Orthodox Christians and thus it behooves us to learn about these, how to prepare for these, and how to best take advantage of the Grace that our Lord freely gives us in these sacraments. At St. Vladimirs we have created a special web site for this purpose with much information in this regard. Please find the web site listed below and please contact Fr. Gregory with questions!

Make Support of STV a Spiritual Question

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
(Matthew 6:21)

St. Vladimirs Orthodox Church has always, throughout its 40+ year history, been well supported by its parishioners. This is something that we can be proud of and thankful for. However, this is also something that we often do not think very much about. We know that when we are in church on Sunday there will be some sort of collection, but we dont usually think very much about this, either before the collection or afterwards. We see this as just a part of going to church. However, stewardship, how we use what God has given us, is something that we should consider and something that we should plan.
