No Services Tonight or Tomorrow
1/2/22, 05:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Friends,

Please note that, due to the heavy expected snowfall, we will not have Liturgy and Pre-K Catechism on Wednesday morning as scheduled. There will also be no evening services on Tuesday (today).

Please spread the word to those that you know, or even suspect, were planning to attend the Liturgy or the class.

Thank you for your understanding. And for your prayers as I traveled. After a 30 hour travel adventure (which would normally be about 14), including an overnight in the Paris airport, that was not part of my original itinerary, I have returned safely. There's even more, but I'll tell you more on Sunday. All's well that ends well I guess. :)

See you soon at St. Vladimir's! But not tomorrow!

In every situation, always try to be pleasant, that is, maintain a peaceful and humble spirit. Do not judge, or grieve anyone, striving so that your words, according to the commandments of the apostles, will be mixed with spiritual salt.

Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
30/1/22, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable – others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.

Monday: James 2:14-26 & Mark 10:46-52
Tuesday: James 3:1-10 & Mark 11:11-23
Wednesday: James 3:11-4:6 & Mark 10:22-26
Thursday: James 4:7-5:9 & Mark 11:27-33
Friday: I Peter 1:1-2, 10-12, 2:6-10 & Mark 12:1-12
Saturday: I Thessalonians 5:14-23 & Luke 17:3-10

Please find below several very nice articles on how to read the scripture from an Orthodox point of view.

Confession & Communion at St. Vladimir’s + Rule to Prepare for Communion
30/1/22, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Confession and Communion are the two sacraments we most often partake of as Orthodox Christians and thus it behooves us to learn about these, how to prepare for these, and how to best take advantage of the Grace that our Lord freely gives us in these sacraments. At St. Vladimir’s we have created a special web site for this purpose with much information in this regard. Please find the web site listed below and please contact Fr. Gregory with questions!

New Icon Given - Another Ordered
29/1/22, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Thank God, we have received a beautiful gift for our parish – a full size copy of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God. We will place this icon in a prominent place – above the icon of St. John of Shanghai & San Francisco. But we will need an icon to go above St. Xenia too – otherwise the balance of the iconography will be quite out of sorts. The perfect icon to bring us back to symmetry would be an icon of St. Job of Pochaev of the same size. THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE GIVEN WE HAVE COLLECTED MORE THAN 50% OF THE COST OF THE ICON! We have therefore ordered the icon – but we need to finish collecting the second half of the cost of the icon so we can pay the iconographer when he finishes in a few weeks. :)

We have decided to crowd fund this – so everyone can add their part and pay for the icon of St. Job together as a parish family. Please make a donation today – and if we all do this together we’ll get this paid for very quickly! -Fr. Gregory
