YIKES – Great Lent is Coming Soon!
20/1/15, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
Those who have had a chance to look at this year's annual calendar have no doubt noticed that Great Lent is coming soon! That is not a bad thing by any means, and it is good for us in a way to see those Lenten days coming and to prepare for them. A few things to note:

- The schedule for the first week will include three days of the full cycle of services beginning at 8:00 a.m.: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

- We will hold our Great Lenten Lecture Series again this year. We are working out details with our keynote speaker and once we have done that we will release the full schedule of lectures. As always there will be a lecture each of the Sundays of Great Lent.

- Vespers will be held on Sundays after the Great Lenten Lecture on March 1, 15, and 29. This is a very beautiful service that transitions us liturgically from the weekend back to the Great Lenten weekday paradigm, including the chanting of the Great Prokimenon. This will be the first year that we serve this service and we invite all to participate!

- We intend to serve Presanctified Liturgies on most Wednesday evenings and Friday mornings of the fast – more details to come soon

Each year following the feast of the Theophany (the Lord’s Baptism – January 19) it is a traditional and pious custom to have one’s home blessed by the priest. Homes are blessed at St. Vladimir’s through the fifth week of Great Lent. Please fill in your name below on a date and time that work for you at this link:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IgC8lReVY-IbIsRNeR7zHNOvPXrfAiNonG7WOO3_r7E/edit?usp=sharing

Please contact Fr. Gregory, Fr. Michael, or Fr. Joseph to schedule a house blessing or if the times listed do not work for you. If you live far from St. Vladimir’s please consult with those other parishioners of St. Vladimir’s who live near you so that you can all have your homes blessed on the same evening. Congratulations to all with the feast of our Lord’s Baptism!

Today the Holy Church celebrates the great feast of Theophany, also known popularly as the Lord's baptism. However, although our Savior was baptized on this day, the feast is much more than that! Please read the links below to learn more, and please join us for Divine Liturgy today at 8:00 a.m. followed by our annual procession to "the Jordan" to bless the waters on this day!

Annual Meeting Set for February 15
17/1/15, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
The date of the annual parish meeting has been set for Sunday, February 15, immediately following the Divine Liturgy. This is also Meatfare Sunday and we will have our annual Blini dinner that day as well. We combined these two activities last year and both were very successful! We assume many people came for the annual meeting and stayed for blini. But perhaps it was the reverse? In any case, it worked well and we will do it again. Please save the date now!

Sunday is a Fasting Day?
16/1/15, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
This must be a mistake on the calendar, no? In fact – no – Sunday really is a fasting day. Why? The eve of Theophany is always a fasting day – no matter what day of the week the eve of Theophany falls on. So yes – Sunday is in fact a Lenten day. Please take note, and please plan to join us that day for Liturgy, or Vigil in the evening for the feast of the Theophany, or even better: for both services! :)

9-12 Year Old Youth Group Meets this Sunday!
16/1/15, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
The upcoming Sunday is a really busy one! But we absolutely want to meet with our 9-12 year olds as scheduled. So - we are planning a serious session of "Stump the Priest". This time we will divide up into two teams: boys vs. girls. And this will be a competition! Who can come up with the best (not the most obscure, but the most useful) question? Whoever does wins! And although Sunday is a fast day, there is some Lenten chocolate on offer for first prize. Don't miss it! Parents - please help your young person prepare a good question or two. Stump the priest will take place at 1:30 p.m. sharp at the parish church. See you Sunday!
