Adult Group Meets May 22 – You have Homework!
18/5/15, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
The founding of the “Strengthening of Orthodox Marriage League”. Or perhaps we will call it something else. In any case, this is a meeting you won't want to miss. You will want to tell your children “I did everything I could to strengthen marriage and I was there when this group was founded.” Marriage is struggling in the world and in our society. Why? This is a thought-provoking article in this regard and this is our homework for the Adult Discussion Group that will meet at Fr. Gregory's home in Saline at 7:00 p.m. on May 22:

http://blogs.ancientfaith.com/glory2god ... suffering/

This is not to say that we are being told to agree with everything in this article. But it is though-provoking, and that is a good thing to prepare for a discussion group!

Let's work on the answers to this issue together! How do we strengthen our own marriage? How do we help others without being intrusive? What do we do?! Do we found a group that supports us in this regard? We don't have every answer – but with God's help and our sincere effort we must – as Christians – believe that there is hope. Join us! Help us to strengthen marriage in our parish now and in the future!

An Important Article – Traditional Orthodox Theology as the True Philosophy
18/5/15, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
This is an excellent article. Not too long, not too short, but filled with important information for us as Orthodox Christians living in the contemporary world:

“Orthodox theology stresses man’s regeneration and transformation in Christ through seeing and participating in God within the body of the Church by means of watchfulness, ascesis, prayer, sacramental life, purification, illumination and sanctification.”

“...pure life and a clear mind are preconditions for Theology and pure theoria...”

Those quotes should sound very familiar and very right to us. But there are those that seem to want to throw out the Fathers of the Church as “dated” and “old fashioned”. Read this article to find out why a jettisoning of the Father of the Church is not at all a good idea and that doing so would have real, dilatory effects on our spiritual lives.

Visiting Cemeteries
16/5/15, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
On Radonitsa (second Tuesday after Pascha – 40 days before Pentecost) it is the tradition of the Holy Church to begin to visit the graves of our friends and loved ones and greet them with the Resurrection. We have accomplished a good bit of that this week, but certainly there are more graves to go. Please contact Fr. Gregory if you would like to set up a visit to relatives you may have buried outside of Ann Arbor. This should be completed by the feast of the Ascension, May 21 this year.

Please note that we have listed several Orthodox radio streams on the home page of our sound blog, Sound of the Parish. It is our hope that some day we will have our own parish radio station, but until that day we want to offer you a couple of options that you may find useful and interesting. Many of us work at our desks and at our computers for much of the day. Why not sanctify that time by listening to something spiritually enlightening? Why not indeed! Let us! At the Sound of the Parish you will find the links on the upper right had side of the page. Enjoy!

Update on Mary Ann McCulloch
15/5/15, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
It seems that Mary Ann will soon be falling asleep in the Lord. Likely today or tomorrow. Please be very zealous in these last hours to pray for her salvation. Mary Ann has lived a good Orthodox Christian life. We have no reason to doubt her eternal reward. At the same time, as Orthodox Christians, we do not take anything in the next life for granted. The Lord truly knows our hearts. He is the one who makes decisions about salvation - this is above our "pay grade" so to speak. That being said, our prayers for Mary Ann will be helpful for her and they will be helpful for us as we show love in a truly Christian manner by praying for her. We will keep you updated. But in the mean time, please remember Mary Ann in your prayers.

St. Athanasius the Great Commemorated Today
15/5/15, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
One of the most important of the Holy Fathers, St. Athanasius the Great, is celebrated today by the Holy Church. Why was he so important? Please read below to learn more. To entice you: St. Athanasius wrote the life of St. Anthony the Great and was the Patriarch of Alexandria for 47 years. That is rather amazing in and of itself – but there is more. St. John Chrysostom advised that every Orthodox Christian should read the life of St. Athanasius. We provide you that opportunity below!

The Best Time of Year
14/5/15, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory
This time of year - the time between Pascha and Pentecost - is really the best time of year for us as Orthodox Christians. We celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord in a very outward and glorious manner for 40 days - just as He continued His work on the earth for the 40 days after His Resurrection until He ascended back into Heaven from whence He had come.

We include here a link to some beautiful photos with the theme of our Lord's Resurrection found on the most popular Russian web site:

You can also find great photos of Pascha here in our parish on our photo album page:

Enjoy and rejoice - Christ is Risen!
