Prayer in the Time of Coronavirus
27/3/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

It is important for us to pray. To focus. To have something that we can do rather than just sit all day and think about viruses coming to get us when we aren’t looking. :) Obviously that is not how the virus works. If we social distance we save lives. Period. But the verb “to social distance” is, at its very best, passive. We are not passive beings! We need to act! This prayer was approved by the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The English is our translation and I thank those that helped with this! I STRONGLY suggest that each of us read this prayer every day at 2:00 p.m. If you can’t read it then – read it ANY time. At least once.

St. Vladimir Church Closed to Public Worship
24/3/20, 12:01 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

According to the Executive Order of Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Policy of the Diocese of Chicago & Mid-America, St. Vladimir's is temporarily closed to public worship due to the coronavirus pandemic. Although we are saddened by this situation, we also understand that in this war all of society – including our St. Vladimir’s family – must unite to defeat the virus enemy. All resources must be brought to bear if victory is to be obtained. For us that means isolating ourselves from each other so that we do not in any way endanger those in our community who are at high risk of death from the virus. Most of us are healthy. Most of us are strong. Most of us will be unaffected by the virus. But we have to do our part – we have to fight selfish self interest – and we have to follow the advice of the experts and be obedient to the decisions of our ruling bishop. We thank everyone for their understanding and for their efforts to get us to the point of victory over this invisible foe!

Please contact me or Fr. Moses at any time for any spiritual or material support you need during this time of quarantine. With God’s help and our sincere effort we can have great hope in overcoming our common societal enemy! Let it never be said that we did not do our part with sincerity and zeal! Let it never be said that we felt ourselves “special” and not in need of taking part in this war! As Orthodox Christians let us be exemplary members of the society in which the merciful Lord has placed us! Let us serve others with valor and Christian Love, whether that service is (for most of us) just staying home and staying safe, or hands-on service of those in need, or other action that we may be called to in service to the eventual victory! All Divine Services will be broadcast on our Live Streams – please join us and worship with us just as you would when we gather in the Church, but from your own “desert” that the Lord has provided us during this time of Great Lent. We are pilgrims in this life dear brothers and sisters – the pandemic has just reminded us a bit of this reality. Glory to God for this and for all things!

Monday First Things: Teaching of the Holy Fathers
23/3/20, 06:00 AM

“One should not seek among others the truth that can be easily gotten from the Church. For in her, as in a rich treasury, the apostles have placed all that pertains to truth, so that everyone can drink this beverage of life. She is the door of life.”

Ask the Priest Homework
20/3/20, 12:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

In order to make Ask the Priest more engaging I am suggesting the following video. Please watch it before Ask the Priest on Monday at 8:00 p.m. so we can discuss the very interesting life of the priest who is described in the video. This was to have been the Great Lenten Lecture topic of Subdeacon Micah Chisholm on March 29, but since we had to cancel the lecture series this year I think it is OK to share this now. :)

LIFE OF FR. NIKOLA YANNEY

We will discuss much more than this, but I think it makes sense to spend some time on this excellent video. If you have other suggestions for future AtP homework please share with Fr. Gregory.

Great Lent began March 2 - Pascha is April 19
18/3/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please note that Great Lent began this year on March 2. The week previous to this is a week where all foods are allowed except for meat. During Great Lent we abstain from meat and dairy products including fish (although fish is allowed on Annunciation, April 7 and Palm Sunday, April 12). Let us recall that fasting is a tool given to us by God to aid us spiritually. For some it is easy to fast, for others it is difficult. However, what is most important is that we make a sincere effort to follow the fast. Why? Simply because the fast helps us to see our sins by helping us to focus spiritually. Eating “light” foods, or perhaps rather, abstaining from “heavy” foods such as meats and cheeses, allows us to be less focused on our stomachs and more focused on our souls, and of course, in this season when we undergo our journey to the Resurrection of our Lord we dearly wish to improve ourselves spiritually that we might meet the risen Christ better than we were when we began Great Lent. St. John Chrysostom writes that we abstain from meats that we might abstain from our sins. This nicely sums up the reason the Holy Church, as a loving mother, gives us the gift of fasting. Pascha is April 19 – may God grant us all a spiritually profitable Great Lent!

Parish Coronavirus Update 3/18/20
18/3/20, 12:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Please see a very important communication for our St. Vladimir's family at the link below:

PARISH CORONAVIRUS UPDATE 3/18/20

This communication covers the following key issues:

1. The Instructional Letter from Archbishop Peter to the parishes from 3/17/20

2. How we will put into place Vladyka's instructions in our parish

3. Sign up for Divine Services (that will make sense when you read the parts above) so we keep to our 50 person maximum

4. Confession as our weakest Public Health link and how we can minimize the risk

Thank you for your attention to these important matters. We know you are getting fatigued from all this information and we will try to keep this to a minimum. But if we don't share this life and death information it will be our sin and the innocent will suffer.

In Christ,

Fr. Gregory

Twelve Years from the Repose of Metropolitan Laurus
16/3/20, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Today marks twelve years since the repose of His Eminence Metropolitan Laurus. On the Sunday of Orthodox 2008 Vladyka failed to appear at the entrance of the cathedral at Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY. The clergy went to his skete to gather him and found that he had peacefully reposed during the night. I still remember that day. We found out at the end of the Liturgy and we had the great honor to serve a memorial service right then and there – while everyone was still in the church. Yes – we do not do memorial services on Sundays. But there is an exception to every rule, and if we would not have served the service I am convinced that the faithful would have begun to sing the pannykhida hymns extemporaneously in any case...
